The Big Game is almost here!! Listen, I’m a huge football fan I really am, but if my Giants aren’t in it (which unfortunately has been a bit of a trend in the later years), I’m really not too too focused on the game. However, that halftime show always has me pumped. I’m always so excited to see what artist is going to be headlining, and what kind of crazy antics are going to happen. It made me think what the best halftime shows were in my mind, and I think I came up with a pretty solid list!
- Madonna with M.I.A, Nicki Minaj, CeeLo, and LMFAO (2012)
Between the Roman armor, and Madonna dressed as Cleopatra being carried out on a throne singing Vogue to Nick Minaj and M.I.A dressed as cheerleaders (and M.I.A of course flipping the bird on live television), this was quite the spectacle. LMFAO as always, were incredibly entertaining, and CeeLo showed up as a drum major. That was interesting. It was pretty much the Madonna show featuring the other acts, and we wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
- U2 (2002)
Besides U2 being U2 and always putting on a great show, this halftime show was iconic and special in its own right. This performance was only mere months after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, so when the band performed its hits such as “Beautiful Day” and “Where The Streets Have No Name”. There was even a very moving tribute with the names of all of the 9/11 victims. It was exactly what the country needed at that time.
- Aerosmith, Britney Spears, N*SYNC, Nelly, and Mary J. Blidge (2001)
Can you get any more 90’s/early 2000’s than this? N*SYNC opening up the show with the always amazing “Bye, Bye, Bye” leading right into Aerosmith’s “Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” and just going back and forth between the two (very different) bands, it was entertaining to say the least. Britney and Mary J showed up at the end to join both bands in singing “Walk This Way”, even though I personally think both women deserved larger parts in the act, it was still a halftime show to remember.
- Katy Perry with Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliot (2015)
Katy came in on a giant tiger….we KNEW this was gonna be good. Like always, Miss. Katy gave us a show, and introduced us to the iconic left shark. Lenny joined her on stage to sing “I Kissed A Girl”. Missy Elliot showing up singing “Get Ur Freak On” was exactly what this performance needed, and then of course Katy flying thru the air to “Firework”. Magic.
- Beyonce (2013)
Two words. Queen. Bey. Even when she returned to the stage years later to “join” Coldplay (she stole the show, let’s be real) it was epic. It’s Beyonce, it’s always epic. And adding that mini Destiny’s Child reunion was everything the world needed. Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams even sung “Single Ladies” with Bey and performed the iconic dance. All around, it was amazing! No surprise there, of course.
- Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson (P. Diddy, Kid Rock, Jessica Simpson and Nelly were there, too) (2004)
This whole performance was honestly amazing, but of course all we remember is the infamous wardrobe malfunction between Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake. Before that happened, Janet stormed the stage opening the show, leading into Nelly and P.Diddy singing “Hot In Here” (which was perfect in so many ways). Apparently Kid Rock and Jessica Simpson showed up at some point. We have to admit, aside what happened, this whole show was great and one to remember.
- Bruno Mars and Red Hot Chili Peppers
I personally think that Bruno Mars can be so underrated at times. This guy can put on a show, a GREAT one at that. The show opens with a children’s choir singing “Billionaire” and pans over to Bruno killing it on the drums for “Treasure”. If anyone had a doubt that this halftime show was going to be anything but perfection, those doubts were gone within the first two minutes. Red Hot Chili Peppers were the perfect addition to this already perfect performance.
- Prince (2014)
It actually rained during “Purple Rain”. You cannot get any better than that. Prince was an icon, and always put on an amazing show, so there was no shadow of a doubt that this was going to be a perfect halftime show. No one thought it could get any better, until it did. That year during the game, there was a downpour over the stadium, and it fit ever so perfectly with Prince’s “Purple Rain”, and he owned it.
- Michael Jackson (1993)
I have said this many times, and I will say it again. The King of Pop can do no wrong. If you disagree with me, well then you’re wrong. MJ exploding from the bottom of the stage set the perfect tone for this performance, and literally just stared. He stared for 90 seconds and the world was loving it. And what better song to start with then the always amazing “Billie Jean”? No one can forget the image of the entire stadium lifting up posters, to create giant portraits of kids while Jackson sang “Heal The World.”
- Lady Gaga (2017)
The best of the best. All hail Gaga. This was incredible from start to finish (only thing that would’ve made this even better would have been Beyonce coming out when she was singing “Telephone”). She jumped down from the top of the stadium…how can you top that!? And she started the show with “Poker Face”. COME ON. Lady Gaga is incredible and there is no question about that. I personally am extremely excited to see if this year’s performance will be able to top this one.
